PUT THE BOTTLE BILL TO WORK FOR NEW YORK!
Since 1982, New York's Bottle Bill has done more to control litter and spur recycling than any other state or local program. More than 70% of the bottles and cans bearing a 5-cent deposit are returned. That means less litter and broken glass in our streets and playgrounds, more material being recycled, and less waste going to landfills and incinerators. It has also created thousands of new jobs in New York.
By all accounts, the Bottle Bill has been a success. But the Bottle Bill can work even harder for New York. As we celebrate the Bottle Bill's 21st anniversary, it's time to bring it up to date to meet our state's current and future needs.
NEW YORK NEEDS A BIGGER, BETTER BOTTLE BILL
Bills have been introduced in the State Legislature to improve the Bottle Bill in several important ways. These bills would make the state law:
Bigger -- by expanding coverage of the Bottle Bill to include non-carbonated beverages like bottled water, iced tea and sport drinks;
Better -- by requiring that unclaimed deposits (an estimated $80+ million a year) be returned to the state to fund local recycling programs; and,
More effective -- by ensuring that more bottles and cans are returned and recycled rather than sent to landfills and incinerators.

Update the Bottle Bill!
The Bottle Bill has been good for our environment, good for our economy, and good for our communities. And we can make it even better!
Here are three simple things your organization can do to help pass the Bigger, Better Bottle Bill in 2004:
• Join the campaign. When you return the form below we will add your group's name to the growing list of organizations and local governments that support updating the Bottle Bill. We will also, upon your request, add you to a listserve with timely updates and action alerts about the legislation.
• Let your legislators know. Send a letter of support, on your organization's official letterhead, to your own state legislators and to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno.
• Spread the word! Put articles in your newsletter, send a letter to the editor, and give out information at community events. Everyone benefits from an expanded Bottle Bill.
